Detective charges trio with stealing guns from Boy Scout reservation in Nebo
Detective Andy Manis of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged 22-year-old Richard Eugene McKinney, of Vein Mountain Road in Nebo; 42-year-old Joel Alan Smith of Landis Lane in Nebo; and 19-year-old Sonny Isaiah Smith, of Zeb Vance Street in Marion, with felony breaking and entering and felony larceny after breaking and entering.
The three are accused of breaking into the Boy Scout reservation on Vein Mountain Road sometime during the weekend of Dec. 15-17 and stealing 21 firearms, including 13 Marlin .22-caliber single-shot, bolt-action competition rifles; four Weatherby 12-gauge pump shotguns; one Remington 12-gauge pump shotgun; and three Remington 20-gauge pump shotguns worth a total of $14,400.
Two of the suspects live near the Scout camp. Manis said investigators received information that led them to the trio.
Twelve of the guns have been recovered.
Additional arrests are pending.
