Drugs, a loaded gun and drug sales paraphernalia found during a traffic stop. Driver Arrested!
On 3/26/15 just after the midnight hour, Traffic Collision Investigator Officer Corey Baker was on the prowl in his patrol car looking for impaired drivers.
He observed a red Toyota Camry stopped at a green light at the intersection of Cochran Street and First Street. Corey thought this was suspicious and believed the driver may be impaired. He stopped the vehicle and contacted the driver and three occupants.
The driver, identified as 31 year-old Simi Valley Resident Ryan Newbert was arrested for an outstanding bench warrant. During a subsequent investigation, Officer Baker recovered the following items:
1) A loaded .22 caliber Beretta semi-automatic pistol that had the serial number ground off.
2) 25 grams of Methamphetamine;
3) A small quantity of Heroin;
4) Some Xanax and Oxycontin pills (No prescription);
5) A digital scale;
6) Paraphernalia used to package drugs for sales.
The suspect was booked in Ventura County Jail for:
1) An outstanding Bench Warrant
2) Possession of a firearm while being a felon;
3) Possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number
4) Possession of Methamphetamine for sales and Transportation of same.
5) Possession of a loaded firearm in a public place.
Due to the fact that his impairment while driving was slight, he was not arrested for DUI. His car, which turned out to be a rental car was stored at a local towing yard.
Officer Baker arrested this subject and removed him from the streets of Simi Valley so he could do no harm to our citizens or police officers. It is clear that illegally armed individuals possessing a loaded gun and quantities of drugs for sales and all the accompanying paraphernalia need to be removed from our streets as soon a possible. The Simi Valley Police Department is asking our citizens to be vigilant when they see suspicious activity and to call us and let us know. The threat posed by individuals who engage in this behavior is extreme and the Department is aggressively enforcing all laws in order to eradicate this type of behavior in our city.
