WEEK IN REVIEW

Robbery

On Tuesday, March 17th, around 6 p.m., Ofc. Yaeger and Recruit Officer Ramos responded to a robbery that had just occurred at McDonald’s on Union Square. A black male suspect brandished a knife at three victims, robbed them of their cell phones, and ran onto BART property. Ofc. Vasicek noticed a subject on a BART platform who matched the suspect description, and all three stolen phones were found on his person. The 17-year-old Oakland resident was arrested.

Assault with a Deadly Weapon

On Saturday, March 21st, around 3:50 p.m., Ofc. Leete responded to the Taco Bell parking lot on Industrial Parkway on reports of a brandishing. A suspect approached several victims in the parking lot, brandished a black semi-automatic handgun, and accused them of breaking into his mother’s car at an unknown location (possibly in South Hayward). He said he would be back later and he was going to shoot someone. He then drove his vehicle out of the parking lot. The suspect was described as a black male, 20-23 years old, 6’0” and 160-170 lbs., wearing black-rimmed glasses. The vehicle was described as a silver or gray, newer model Honda Accord or Civic.

On Sunday, March 22nd, around 11 a.m., officers responded to the Home Depot on Industrial Parkway on reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. It appears the same suspect from yesterday’s incident approached another group of victims and began to accuse them of damaging his mother’s car. He eventually struck two of them with a black, semi-automatic handgun, before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle as Saturday’s incident.

Detectives are continuing to investigate these incidents.

Stolen Property (Gun)

On Sunday, March 22nd, around 9:15 a.m., Ofc. Rivas conducted a traffic stop in the area of Mission Blvd. and Blanche St. The driver consented to a search of the vehicle, which yielded a loaded handgun that had been reported stolen. The driver also had a suspended driver’s license. Paul Brown, a 48-year-old Union City resident, was arrested.

AUTO BURGLARIES AND VEHICLE THEFTS

From Monday, March 16th through Sunday, March 22nd, there were six reported auto burglaries. In one of them, a door lock was punched. Another vehicle did not show any signs of forced entry. The remaining four burglaries occurred via window smashes, and some of the stolen property was in plain view (luggage, electronics, Garmin GPS units, etc.). Safety Tip: As a reminder, never leave items of value inside your vehicle!

From Monday, March 16th through Sunday, March 22nd, there were 15 reported vehicle thefts. As of the time of this report, seven of the vehicles have been recovered. A large majority of the thefts were in the Mission Hills and Medallion/Almaden areas, so extra patrol was directed there over the weekend.
