“Police Blotter” Highlights – Ending March 15, 2015

WEEK IN REVIEW

Grand Theft

On Wednesday, March 11th, around 1 p.m., Ofc. Solverson was dispatched to the police department for a disturbance in the front parking lot. It was ultimately determined that two suspects evaded a taxi fare, and then snatched the cab driver’s phone before fleeing on foot. A
24-year-old male Sausalito resident and 24-year-old female Suisun City resident were both arrested.

Armed Robbery

On Thursday, March 12th, around 3:30 a.m., officers responded to the 7-11 on Alvarado-Niles Rd. on reports of an armed robbery. An unknown suspect (pictured to the right) walked into the store, asked the clerk for a product from behind the counter, and produced $5 for the purchase. When the clerk opened the register, the suspect brandished a black semi-automatic handgun and pointed it at the clerk. He reached over the counter and took all the cash from the register drawer before fleeing on foot. The suspect was described as a black male adult, 20-25 years old, 5’8” to
5’10” with a heavy build, wearing all black clothing. The same suspect may be responsible for multiple armed robberies at other convenience stores around the Bay Area. UCPD detectives are working closely with other local law enforcement agencies to investigate these cases.

Weapons Arrests

On Tuesday, March 10th, around midnight, Ofc. Ramos and Ofc. Lanier made a traffic stop for speeding. A search of the vehicle yielded an illegal switchblade and some marijuana. The driver, a 19-year-old male Union City resident, was cited for the switchblade and released.

On Friday, March 13th, around 9:30 p.m., Ofc. Moffitt made contact with two subjects sitting in a parked car on Appian Way. The driver admitted to an unloaded 9mm handgun concealed in the center console of the vehicle. The 30-year-old male Union City resident, was cited and released for possession of a concealed firearm in a vehicle.

On Sunday, March 15th, around 11:30 p.m., Ofc. Ziya contacted two subjects sitting in a parked car at Sea Breeze Park (32600 Carmel Way). The driver admitted to several illegal items in the vehicle, including a loaded revolver. A search of the vehicle and surrounding area also yielded a semi-automatic handgun, concealed knife, ammunition, and a high-capacity magazine. Sione Toki, a 20-year-old Hayward resident, was arrested on several weapons charges.


Burglary Tools

On Friday, March 13th, around 1:15 p.m., Ofc. Dejong made a traffic stop in the area of Mission Bl. and Whipple Rd. for expired vehicle registration. The occupants were all on probation. The driver was using a “shaved key” in the ignition, and the vehicle was not registered to him. Jose Vargas, a 31-year-old San Leandro resident, was arrested for the possession of burglary tools.


BURGLARIES AND CAR THEFTS

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES

From Monday, March 9th through Sunday, March 15th, there were six reported residential burglaries:
• 32300 block of Deborah Dr.: Occurred on Monday, March 9th, between 11 a.m. and
11:45 a.m. The front door was forced open. The loss included jewelry, clothing and electronics.
• 400 block of Samoa Cir.: Occurred between Thursday, March 5th at 5 a.m. and Tuesday, March 10th at 9:15 a.m. The front or the rear door was pried, but there was no damage. The house was partially ransacked, and the loss included jewelry, collectible figurines and guitars.
• 34400 block of Mission Blvd.: Occurred between Saturday, March 7th at 5 p.m. and Tuesday, March 10th at 9:45 a.m. The lock to a storage unit was removed by unknown means, and a box of items was stolen.
• 33200 block of Mission Blvd.: Occurred on Thursday, March 12th, between 6:45 a.m.
and 6:55 a.m. A suspect entered an open kitchen window, but he fled when confronted by the resident. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male adult, 25-29 years old, 5’8” and 175 lbs.
• 4100 block of Horner St.: Occurred on Thursday, March 12th, between 8:15 a.m. and
4:30 p.m. Entry was made via a pried front door. The residence was ransacked, and the loss included jewelry, electronics and cash.
• 34400 block of Mission Blvd.: Several residents reported that their storage units were broken into and golf clubs were stolen.

AUTO BURGLARIES AND VEHICLE THEFTS

From Monday, March 9th through Sunday, March 15th, there were five reported auto burglaries. In one of them, the stolen property was taken from the trunk via unknown means. The other four incidents involved property that was in plain view, such as backpacks and briefcases left on the floor or on a seat. Safety Tip: As a reminder, never leave items of value inside your vehicle!

From Monday, March 9th through Sunday, March 15th, there were two reported vehicle thefts. As of the time of this report, neither of the vehicles has been recovered.

Det. James Cordero was awarded Officer of the Month for March. Det. Cordero was nominated
for his tireless efforts that led to the arrests of two robbery suspects, with full confessions. Det. Cordero’s strong work ethic and proactive policing removed two dangerous criminals off the streets of Union City.
