Two Troopers Promoted to Corporals

Lowell-The Superintendent of the Indiana State Police, Douglas G. Carter has promoted Troopers Dan Avitia and Zachary Beaver to the rank of Corporal where they will serve as a District Duty Officer at the Lowell post.

Senior Trooper Dan Avitia is a fifteen year veteran of the Indiana State Police having been appointed on June 10th, 1999. Upon graduation from the recruit academy Avitia was assigned to the Lowell District where he was assigned to patrol Lake and Porter Counties. After three years he was assigned as a detective in the gaming division where he stayed for six years and was then reassigned to the Gang Response Investigative Team (GRIT). He worked GRIT for three years and then went to the Drug Enforcement Section as a detective for two years. Avitia was then assigned back to the Lowell District where he again worked Lake and Porter Counties until his promotion to Corporal.

Avitia is an East Chicago native and a graduate of Bishop Noll High School. He attended Indiana University and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Spanish. He spent eleven years in the Army and was a Lieutenant in the Infantry.

He was a Field Training Officer, member of the Tactical Intervention Platoon, is a Hostage Crisis Negotiator, Spanish Instructor, STOP selective traffic instructor, and has also received two life savings awards during his career.

Avitia is a member of the American Legion and has a blue belt in the martial arts of Aikido.

He resides in Lake County.

Trooper Zachary Beaver is a two year veteran of the department having been appointed on December 21st, 2012. Upon graduation from the recruit academy Beaver was assigned to the Lowell District where he was assigned to patrol southern Lake County.

He graduated from Crown Point High School in 2005. Beaver spent three years in the Army where he was a Sergeant in the Infantry. After serving in the military he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Indiana University Northwest.

Beaver is a member of the Tactical Intervention Platoon and Meth Suppression Team. He will be attending law school at Chicago Kent College of Law this August.

He resides in Lake County with his family.
