Weekend of fire and tragedy highlight the importance of home protection. See the email message for full details.

The Deal Police Department would like to take a moment to discuss a couple incidents of tragedy and loss as a result of fire that impacted our community this weekend.
First: A historic and beautiful home on Monmouth Drive was heavily damaged by a fast moving fire Saturday evening. Sergeant William Hulse, Patrolman Vincent Volek, Patrolman Dan Liptak, and S/O Nick Parenty were on patrol when they noticed smoke in a neighborhood. Patrolman Volek quickly located a residential fire at the Monmouth Drive home and along with his fellow officers made entry into the summer use residence and attempted to hold the fire to the room of origin until the arrival of the Deal Fire Department moments later. The fire quickly became a third alarm fire, but with the aggressive fire attack by our Deal volunteers as well as the assistance of our mutual aid agencies it was contained to the second and third floors.
Second: A tragic fire with unthinkable loss occurred in Brooklyn, NY this weekend in which 7 children lost their lives and the mother and her other child were severely injured when they jumped from a second floor window to escape. As everyone knows we share a connection to Brooklyn as many of our residents in our close knit community spend their winters there. Relatives living in Deal were overwhelmed with grief when our Officers had to deliver the news to them this weekend. Our Department shares in the communities grief and extends our thoughts to everyone touched by this terrible event.
It has been reported by the media and the FDNY that there were no working smoke detectors in the home at the time of the fire. We cannot stress enough the importance of early detection when it comes to fire. Modern building construction and the contents of our homes are made of materials that fuel fires at a much higher rate then in the past. Small fires create large volumes of toxic smoke and rapidly grow in a short period of time greatly reducing your time to escape. We ask our community to think of the families touched by this tragedy and take the time to test your smoke detectors, install them where recommended, and make sure battery backups are replaced and in good working order.
