Sonoma County Sheriff's Helicopter Rescues Injured Hiker on Mt Hood.

Henry 1 rescue 3/19/2015: CR#150319-006

On 3/19/2015, at about 1:05 PM, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Helicopter, “Henry 1” was dispatched to Hood Mountain Regional Park regarding an injured hiker. The helicopter arrived on scene at about 1:22 PM and quickly located the injured hiker near Mount Hood Trail and Summer Trail. Although the area is remote and inaccessible by vehicle, the Henry 1 crew located a landing site about 200 yards from the injured hiker.

The paramedic walked to the hiker, a 69 year old woman, and found that, although she had suffered a minor injury, she was unable to walk out of the park on her own. Due to the remote location and difficult access by ground, the crew elected to transport the hiker by helicopter. The crew rigged the helicopter for a 100’ long-line rescue. The hiker was secured in a Bauman Bag rescue device. The pilot then flew both the paramedic and the hiker to a landing zone about 200 yards away. The hiker was loaded into the helicopter and flown to an ambulance staged in the area of the Los Guilicos Juvenile Justice Center.

The Henry 1 crew consists of a pilot, deputy sheriff/EMT and a paramedic, all trained to perform long line rescues in the ocean, on cliffs and other remote areas located along the North Coast.
