BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Burlington Police Department has been serving the Burlington Community for 150 years. That service has evolved over the years to the Community Policing we take part in today. Community Policing is a philosophy that combines the elements of partnerships, problem-solving and innovation.
Over the past year, the Burlington Police Department has worked with other City Departments, businesses and residents to create and develop new ways to engage the Community. The Community Engagement Open House and Barbecue, held on September 18, 2014 was one of those creations. BPD teamed up with many Community Partners to host an informal networking event in Battery Park. The event could not be the huge success it was without the help of the donations from many businesses in the City.
One of those businesses was Hannaford Supermarket on North Avenue. Over the years, Hannaford has stepped up to assist the Community repeatedly. They have donated to entities throughout the City for a variety of events. With only three weeks of planning, Hannaford donated a substantial amount of the food that helped make the Community Engagement Barbecue a success. Hannaford Supermarket continually helps the Community come together and their exceptional Community support and efforts have earned them the 2015 Queen City Police Foundation Community Hero Award.
Over 700 people from all over Burlington attended the Community Engagement Barbecue and Open House on September 18th. However, one ten year old stood out from the crowd. Gianna R. approached the Chief of Police, Michael Schirling with an idea for Community Development. Gianna’s grandmother had attended the Community Police Academy class in January, 2014 and shared with Gianna what she had learned about the City’s Police Department in the class. Gianna realized there wasn’t a similar class for the youth of Burlington, and came up with the idea to develop one. She presented her idea to Chief Schirling at the Barbecue and then followed up with him shortly after. Gianna developed the first outline of what should be taught in the class, and worked with Chief Schirling to develop a curriculum for the first ever Burlington Junior Community Academy. Gianna then attended the Academy in January, 2015, with 32 other students. Gianna saw a need in her Community and created an idea to fill it, then worked to make her idea a reality. Her exceptional Community effort has earned her the 2015 Antonio B. Pomerleau Medal of Honor Award.
For over fourteen years, the Queen City Police Foundation has worked closely with the Burlington Police Department to provide funding for projects to better serve the community. We are continually looking for innovative ways to provide the tools needed for the Burlington Police Department to allow officers to do their jobs more efficiently, with added safety, and with greater impact on community health.
The Benefit Lunch is the cornerstone of our recognition and fundraising programs as well as a means for celebrating the community’s support of the Foundation. Membership is available at many levels, and all contributions are tax deductible to the extent of the law.
This year, we are focusing our fundraising efforts on supporting contemporary outdoor/winter gear for officers. While annual budgets allow for rotational replacement as garments fail, a complete overhaul of winter gear is far more elusive.
