Two hikers and their dog "Cheerios" safe after rescue in Rubio Canyon after 10 hours in the mountains.
Altadena Search and Rescue Team started a search at 11:30 p.m. Sunday night for 2 lost hikers in the area of Rubio Canyon, in Angeles National Forest. The lost hikers were able to call 911 and say they were lost in the mountains above Altadena. Altadena Search and Rescue Team responded into Rubio Canyon and made voice contact the missing hikers. Search crews were not able to reach the hikers at the time and discovered they also had their dog, Cheerios with them. The search crews hiked along the Incline Trail, made contact with the hikers and were able to lead the hikers and Cheerios out to safety. The hikers, 22 y/o male and 21 y/o female, both residing in Los Angeles, were not injured. The hikers started a hike at 4:00 pm and became lost on an unfamiliar trail in the darkness. Altadena rescue team walked the hikers out of the canyon at 2:00 a.m.
Search and Rescue Team members are Reserve Sheriff’s deputies who volunteer their time to help others for $1 a year, and who partner with sheriff’s civilian volunteers who volunteer for free. There are over 150 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. These rescuers were activated for over 450 search and rescue missions last year, making it one of the most active counties for search and rescue missions in the nation.
