Narrative:
On March 10, 2015, at about 12:50 PM, Moorpark Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Vons market located at 4241 Tierra Rejada Road in Moorpark, CA reference a theft that had just occurred. A Vons employee reported a subject, later identified as Dushaun Nichols, had just stolen multiple bottles of high end alcohol products. The employee stated that Nichols had been in Vons before and had stolen $700-$1000 worth of alcohol on prior occasions. Nichols ran out of the Vons with the stolen alcohol and got into a white SUV that was occupied by another male, later identified as Charles Burks. Nichols got into the driver’s seat and sped away.

A Thousand Oaks Sheriff’s Detective spotted Nichols’ white SUV on Tierra Rejada near the Vons. Nichols sped up and led the detective and responding deputies on a pursuit, failing to yield to deputy’s emergency lights and sirens. Nichols drove at a high rate of speed and on the wrong side of the road as he traveled west bound on Santa Rosa Road towards the City of Camarillo. Nichols drove into the residential neighborhood off East Las Posas Road and the pursuit ended when Nichols drove into a dead end in the area of Presilla Road east of Barranca Road. Nichols and Burks exited the vehicle and ran from the deputies in an attempt to evade capture. Burks was taken into custody almost immediately after exiting the vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Aviation Unit helicopter assisted with the search. A request for the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit and Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Bloodhound was made due to the extreme terrain in the area. Approximately 20 minutes later, Deputies located Nichols hiding under a piece of plywood in a nearby backyard. Both suspects were safely taken into custody without incident.

Over $1100 dollars of stolen alcohol was recovered from Nichols’ vehicle. Nichols was also identified as the suspect in two prior burglaries of high end alcohol from this same Vons. Nichols was booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility for three counts of burglary, resisting arrest, and felony evading. Burks was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility for burglary and resisting arrest.
