Advisory

Roadway conditions are beginning to deteriorate as a result of the wintery precipitation;

The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of northern Louisiana which is in effect until 9 a.m. Today. Winter precipitation including freezing rain, sleet and snow is anticipated for much of North and North Central Louisiana.

Ice is beginning to accumulate on roadways in Ouachita parish, especially on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses.

Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling over these elevated roadways. DOTD crews have been out through the night treating roadways and monitoring conditions. A closure of some roadways is possible. The latest road closure information may be found online at 511la.org or by dialing 511.

Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling and beware of black ice--a thin, transparent layer of ice accumulation that can be visually hard to detect on bridges, overpasses, off-ramps and in shady spots.

As conditions deteriorate, motorists are encouraged to refrain from driving until conditions improve. If ice accumulates on bridges or overpasses, the Louisiana State Police will work closely with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to take appropriate measures.

Motorists are reminded to drive responsibly and be prepared for the possibility of slippery driving conditions. The Louisiana State Police offers the following winter weather driving tips:
• Reduce speed
• Allow extra time to reach your destination
• Allow extra space between vehicles
• Do not drive using the cruise control in icy conditions
• Anticipate stops (such as stop signs and traffic signals) and brake gently while stopping
• If you encounter a skid, take your foot off accelerator and steer into the skid until you regain control
• Use low beam headlights if it is raining or sleeting
• Ensure all vehicle occupants are properly restrained

For real time updates on roadway closures, crash locations, and pertinent safety information, stay tuned to the Louisiana State Police Facebook page, follow the LSP Twitter feed @LAStatePolice, or access the DOTD travel information database by calling 511 or logging onto 511la.org.

Additionally, motorists can utilize the DOTD "Way to Geaux" application to receive real-time, around the clock travel alerts. The hands-free, eyes-free smartphone application can be downloaded on any iPhone or Android device by visiting either the iTunes App Store, or Google Play.

Citizens and visitors are also encouraged to enroll and receive Nixle Alerts. To enroll for this free service, visit www.nixle.com, complete the required information, and select Louisiana State Police as your agency.

If you experience difficulties or witness hazardous situations while on the highway, you may notify the nearest State Police Troop office by dialing *LSP (*577) from your cell phone or contact your local law enforcement agency.
