UPDATE: All north and south bound lanes of Cedar Boulevard are now open to traffic.
The driver of a green 1997 Toyota Camry was traveling south on Cedar Boulevard when the train crossing arms and red flashing lights began to lower indicating a train was approaching. The driver noticed a train traveling west along the tracks at which time all 3 occupants of the vehicle exited and ran to safety.
As a result, the passenger train struck the abandoned vehicle before coming to an abrupt halt. In total there were 19 passengers on the train and 4 staff members. Of the 23 people nobody reported being injured. The 3 occupants of the Toyota were located sitting along a nearby sidewalk upon the arrival of Newark Police Department officers. Neither of the 3 reported injuries.
Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a factor in this collision.
