New Castle Man Transported to Hospital after Grant County Crash
Grant County – This morning at approximately 9:25 a.m., officers from the Indiana State Police responded to a single vehicle crash on I-69 near the 262 mile, in which a New Castle man was severely injured.
The preliminary crash investigation by Indiana State Police Master Trooper Randy Renbarger revealed that Jeffery Smiley, 61, New Castle, IN, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck northbound on I-69 near the 262 mile marker. Smiley was allegedly driving too fast for the slick road conditions, causing the Chevrolet to travel off the eastside of the road. The truck rolled at least once coming to rest on its tires. The roof of the truck was crushed causing its occupants to become trapped. They were extricated by responding firefighters.
Greg Callahan, 53, New Castle, IN, a passenger in the truck, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. He suffered severe head and back injuries. Smiley was not injured. Both occupants were wearing seat belts.
This is an ongoing investigation, but at this time neither the use of alcohol nor narcotics is suspected as having contributed to this crash.
