Worn properly, seat belts are your best protection against injury in a crash. Laws, education, and technology have increased seat belt use from 11% in 1981 to nearly 85% in 2010, saving hundreds of thousands of lives. For 16- to 24-year-olds, seat belt use is significantly lower than other age groups. Buckling your seat belt as soon as you sit in your vehicle establishes good habits, and sets a great example for children or other passengers riding with you.
*Children who are eight years of age and older or who are taller than 4’9 must wear belts.
*Children who are younger than eight years of age or who are under 4’9 must use a federally-approved child restraint seat.
*Children under the age of eight may only ride in the front seat of a vehicle if they are physically unable to ride in the rear.
*If your passenger is not wearing a seatbelt and the passenger is under age of 16, the driver of the vehicle can be cited.

*Buckling up with a seatbelt that has a shoulder strap and a lap belt increases your chance of surviving a traffic accident by 4.
*More than ½ of traffic related deaths occur within 25 miles of home- be sure to wear your seatbelt even for short distance trips.
*A collision at 30 mph is equivalent to hitting the ground from top of 3 story building if unrestrained.
