Recovery of apparent homemade explosive device

Date/Time: February 25, 2015 @ 8:10 a.m.
Location: Rancho Tapo Community Park
Simi Valley Police Department Call/Report #15-08345

A Park maintenance employee alerted a Park Ranger of a suspicious object he found during grounds keeping duty in the s/w corner of the park. The object appeared to be a homemade “pipe bomb” type object, packed on the interior with an unknown substance and containing a fuse. The Park Ranger notified the Simi Valley Police Department.

The object was isolated and the area secured pending the notification of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad. Once the Bomb Squad arrived, they safely secured the object in their specially designed transport trailer. They will take the object to their facility for analysis and likely disposal. If their analysis and/or disposal reveal evidentiary findings they will communicate those to the Simi Valley Police Department Detective Unit for additional investigation.

There are no suspects at this time. The origin of the object, reason it was left or placed at the park – and when - are not yet known.

The citizens of Simi Valley are reminded to notify the Simi Valley Police Department whenever they see or hear anything suspicious or locate a suspicious item of any kind. It’s important to remember the volatility of a homemade explosive such as a “pipe bomb” and know that handling one is extremely dangerous!
