Follow up information regarding Officer involved shooting on Plymouth Lane.

Two Green Bay police officers are recovering today after a violent encounter with a subject last evening.

On February 24, 2015, at 7:31 p.m., two Green Bay police officers responded to an address in the 1500 block of Plymouth Lane for a “check the welfare” of Joseph Biegert, 30, who was reported to have taken an unknown amount of medication in an attempt to harm himself. The officers, a 24-year-old male with two years of service and a 28-year-old male with five years of service, made contact with Mr. Biegert in his apartment.

After the officers arrived, a physical confrontation ensued between the officers and Mr. Biegert inside the apartment. Biegert, who was armed with a knife, attacked and stabbed one of the officers in the upper arm. The officers discharged their weapons to stop the threat. Biegert was struck and subsequently died at the scene. Both officers were transported to a local hospital where they were treated for their injuries and released.

In accordance with the law regarding officer involved shootings, the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation was called to lead the investigation into the incident. In accordance with department procedure, the involved officers have been reassigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
