Ohio University Van Crashes Injuring Four

New Castle – Around 3:10 p.m. today, as troopers were dealing with numerous crashes on an ice covered I-70 in Henry County, they received a report of a passenger van over a steep embankment, just west of the New Castle exit, at the 123 mile marker. Trooper Scott Keegan arrived to find a passenger van from Ohio University 389’ off the roadway, over an embankment, into a deep ravine.

Once Keegan made it over the steep embankment, he found the van was occupied by six students from Ohio University, with four being injured. The driver, Daniel Michaud, age 18 of Euclid, Ohio, who wasn’t injured, said he lost control of the van on the ice covered roadway. The van, which had been east bound, slid off the left side of the road and over a steep embankment 389’ before coming to rest against a tree.

Transported from the scene was Catherine Bailey, age 20 of Athens, Ohio, with a concussion. Also transported was Andrew Williams, age 20, of Zanesville, Ohio, with a broken leg. He and Bailey were checked at Henry County Memorial Hospital and later transported by ambulance to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

Also transported from the scene was Camry Carey, age 19 of Dayton, Ohio, with a complaint of pain, and Preselah Seymore, age 18 of Atlanta, GA., with a complaint of pain. Both were treated and released at Henry County Memorial Hospital.

Trooper Keegan said that “The two most seriously injured were back seat passengers in the van and were not wearing their seatbelts. Seatbelts were effective in reducing the nature of the injuries in the other occupants of the van.” Trooper Keegan was assisted at the scene by several Pendleton Troopers, Henry County EMS and Spiceland Township Fire and Rescue.
