Alert

Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 PM this evening to 6 PM CST Monday

...POTENTIALLY SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM TO AFFECT THE MIDSOUTH TONIGHT AND MONDAY... .AN APPROACHING UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL BRING INCREASED MOISTURE TO THE MIDSOUTH BY THIS EVENING...OVERSPREADING AN ARCTIC AIRMASS. A MIXTURE OF SNOW AND SLEET WILL SPREAD INTO AREAS NORTH OF INTERSTATE 40 LATE TONIGHT. SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN WILL BE MORE COMMON ALONG AND TO THE SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 40. THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION WILL LIKELY OCCUR BETWEEN 6 AM AND NOON MONDAY...BEFORE GRADUALLY TAPERING OFF THROUGH LATE MONDAY AFTERNOON. AS OF SUNDAY MORNING...THE LATEST DATA SUGGEST THE POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATIONS HAS SHIFTED NORTH FROM EARLIER FORECASTS. IT NOW APPEARS THAT A CORRIDOR OF HEAVIEST ICE ACCUMULATIONS WILL EXTEND FROM NEAR TUNICA MISSISSIPPI... NORTHEAST ACROSS FAR NORTH MISSISSIPPI. THIS WOULD PLACE THE AREA OF HEAVIEST ICE ACCUMULATIONS TO AREAS JUST SOUTHEAST OF THE MEMPHIS METRO AREA. FURTHER NORTH...THE HEAVIEST SNOW WILL OCCUR WHERE SLEET POTENTIAL IS LOWEST...OVER NORTHEAST ARKANSAS...THE MISSOURI BOOTHEEL AND NORTHWEST TENNESSEE. THESE AREAS COULD SEE 6 TO 9 INCHES OF TOTAL SNOWFALL THROUGH EARLY MONDAY EVENING. SOUTH OF AN OXFORD TO TUPELO LINE...ABOVE FREEZING TEMPERATURES MAY BUILD BACK IN ON MONDAY...LIMITING WINTER PRECIPITATION POTENTIAL. THE WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THOSE AREAS. THIS IS A DYNAMIC WINTER SYSTEM...WITH MULTIPLE PRECIPITATION TYPES. MINOR DEVIATIONS IN THE STORM TRACK COULD GREATLY AFFECT PRECIPITATION TYPE AND AMOUNTS. MIDSOUTHERNERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CLOSELY MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS. ...WIND CHILL ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM CST THIS MORNING... ...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 PM CST MONDAY... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MEMPHIS HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND SLEET...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 PM CST MONDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

* SNOW/SLEET/ICE ACCUMULATIONS...6 TO 9 INCHES OF SNOW... UP TO ONE INCH OF SLEET.

* WIND CHILL VALUES...ZERO TO FIVE BELOW ZERO SUNDAY MORNING.

* TIMING...SUBZERO WIND CHILLS SUNDAY MORNING...POSSIBLE HEAVY SNOW ACCUMULATIONS FROM SUNDAY EVENING THROUGH LATE MONDAY AFTERNOON.

* MAIN IMPACTS...TRAVEL WILL BECOME DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE ON MONDAY.

* AFFECTED AREAS: BENTON ... CARROLL ... CROCKETT ... DYER ... GIBSON ... HENRY ... LAKE ... LAUDERDALE ... OBION ... WEAKLEY

Instructions:

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT... FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE LOW WIND CHILLS. THIS WILL RESULT IN FROST BITE AND LEAD TO HYPOTHERMIA IF PRECAUTIONS ARE NOT TAKEN. IF YOU MUST VENTURE OUTDOORS...MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A HAT AND GLOVES.
