Goleta Resident Fatally Injured by Freight Train

A Goleta woman was fatally injured by a Union Pacific freight train today, February 14, 2015 at approximately 11:15 a.m. near the Amtrak Station in Goleta located at 25 S. La Patera Lane.  The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Suzanne Worsham of Goleta.  Next of kin has been notified.

Worsham’s death is under investigation but at this time appears to be accidental.  Sheriff’s deputies who responded and conducted the initial investigation determined that Worsham had just visited a friend at an encampment nearby and was talking on her cell phone when she walked into the path of the train.  The train was traveling northbound at approximately 60 miles per hour at the time of the collision.  The train conductor sounded his horn several times prior to the collision.

The Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office is conducting a death investigation.  A cause and manner of death will not be determined until toxicology and lab results are complete.
