The City of Menlo Park congratulates Commander William Dixon on his promotion to Police Commander

The City of Menlo Park congratulates Commander William Dixon on his recent promotion to the position of Commander in the Police Department.

Commander William Dixon began his career with the Menlo Park Police Department in January 1990 as a Police Explorer. He held various positions throughout the Special Services Division and Patrol Operations Division of the Police Department prior to being hired as a Police Officer in July 1997 to include parking enforcement, records, and dispatch. As a Police Officer, he shared his experiences with police recruits in the classroom as a police academy training officer and in the community as a Field Training Officer (FTO).

In 2003, W. Dixon was selected as one of the first members of the Menlo Park Police Department’s newly formed Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET). During his time with NET, he qualified as a court recognized expert in the area of narcotics sales and use. He was also the first Menlo Police Officer to be certified by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) as a Drug Recognition Expert.

Promoted to Sergeant in February 2007, he served as a field supervisor for several years before being selected as the department’s Administrative Sergeant. In this capacity, he acted as the project manager when introducing new technologies to the police department, and he oversaw several department patrol units. As the Administrative Sergeant, he also conducted internal investigations for allegations of misconduct.

In January 2014, he was assigned as the Interim Commander of the Patrol Operations Division.

Commander Dixon holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Human Services from Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration at NDNU. He is also a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI).

Having worked in numerous capacities during his tenure with the City of Menlo Park, Commander Dixon holds a vast amount of institutional knowledge and experience.
