Officer Involved Shooting-2100 block of East 17th Street.

On February 7, 2015, at 12:14 AM, the Oakland Police Department Communications Section received a call from a concerned family member regarding their 24 year-old son, who they reported was mentally disturbed and armed with a dangerous weapon threatening to hit family members, in the 2100 block of East 17th Street.

Uniformed patrol officers and a Sergeant responded to the scene driving separate fully marked patrol vehicles. When officers arrived they observed an adult male who was armed with two golf clubs and attempted to strike the officers. Officers gave verbal commands prior to deploying their Tasers to prevent the suspect from injuring the officers. During the Taser deployment, the probes did not make contact with the suspect. The suspect continued his attempts to strike the officers; one of the officers discharged their firearm. The suspect was not struck by gunfire or injured by Taser probes. Medical arrived on scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital for medical clearance and a mental health evaluation.

No officers were injured during this incident. Officers had their body worn cameras activated during this incident, investigators are reviewing the footage.

This is the first time in 20 months an Oakland Police Officer has discharged their firearm at a person. We recognize there are circumstances that require the use of potentially lethal force, and the Oakland Police Department continues to value human life and the community we serve.

The investigation is ongoing and the Oakland Police Department is still processing the scene.

Consistent with Departmental policy, this officer involved shooting must be investigated by the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section and the Oakland Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division.
Information remains preliminary at this time.

The Oakland Police Department is committed to transparency, and a full and complete investigative process that requires information be limited in order to maintain the integrity of the investigation. For this reason, only preliminary details that do not compromise the investigation will be released. Additional information will be released as soon as practical.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821.
