SMPD has succesfully negotiated the safe surrender of the armed suspect. More @ Nixle:

FINAL UPDATE

SMPD Negotiators have successful negotiated the safe surrender of the subject. He is now in our custody and we will work with social services and his loved ones to get him the critical assistance that he needs. The weapons have been seized by SMPD and the residence is now safe and secure.

SMPD wishes to especially thank nearby residents for their cooperation and patience, allowing us the time and ability to bring this incident to a peaceful resolve. Thank you as well to local media for their quick response to requests from SMPD to keep air space over the incident clear which allowed for clear and effective face to face communication with the subject.


UPDATE

The subject is speaking with negotiators and working towards a peaceful surrender. SMPD is also communicating with the subject's family and working to put various social assistance in place to help him as soon as possible. Residents are advised to remain inside and we will update you as soon as possible.

UPDATE 11:00am

SMPD is receiving reports of residents watching the incident from their rooftops. These residents are placing themselves in grave danger as we continue to negotiate for the safe surrender of an armed subject. For your safety, please REMAIN IN YOUR HOMES and stay tuned to Nixle for more updates. Additionally we have issued 2 separate landline alerts to residents in the area and we will continue to do so as the situation evolves.

UPDATE 10:30am
SMPD remains on scene is now negotiating with the armed subject in hopes of resolving the situation peacefully. He is alone in the home and is still a danger to himself. We are still asking ALL residents in the area to shelter in place and stay tuned to Nixle for more updates.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE
This morning at 8:20 am, SMPD responded to the 600 block of Edna Way on a report of a man threatening to hurt himself. Officers arrived quickly on scene and have contained the situation to preserve public safety. SMPD is actively working now to resolve the matter as soon as possible.

As a precaution while we work to resolve the situation, SMPD is asking residents in and around the 600 block of Edna Way, to shelter in place and lock all doors and windows. Again, this is as a precaution for the safety our community while officers on scene work to resolve the situation. We have sufficient police officers present at this time and have the situation contained to protect and preserve public safety.

We will provide updates to our community via Nixle as soon as possible to keep you apprised of the situation and we will notify you once it has been resolved. Please use 911 for emergencies only and do not call 911 for updates regarding this incident. Thank you for your patience.
