Man Pleads Guilty in 2011 Domestic Violence-Related Homicide and Several Other Charges, Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison with No Parole

Tray Chaney, 21, of Jackson, pleaded guilty today in Madison County Circuit Court, Division III, to several charges in connection with a 2011 domestic violence-related homicide and was sentenced to 40 years in prison with no parole.

Based on a plea agreement, Chaney was sentenced to 40 years for the second-degree murder of his estranged girlfriend, Daphne Kenner, 20 years for the attempted second-degree murder of Kenneth Price, 12 years for carjacking, six years for aggravated assault on a Jackson police officer, two years for felony evading arrest and 11 months and 29 days for unlawful possession of a firearm. The sentences will run concurrently for a total effective sentence of 40 years in the Tennessee Department of Correction.

Chaney will receive three years credit for the time he was held pre-trial at the Madison County Jail.

The sentence stems from an incident that occurred on Oct. 11, 2011. Around 2:15 p.m., police responded to a wreck and shooting near the entrance of The Villages at 550 Old Hickory Boulevard.

Police investigators determined that Chaney, who was then 18-years-old, intentionally struck a car that belonged to and was driven by Kenner, 18, of Jackson, and occupied by Kenneth Price, 21, of Jackson, on Old Hickory near The Villages.

After the cars came to a stop, Chaney approached Kenner’s car on foot and shot her and Price. Chaney got back into his car and fled east on Old Hickory and then south on Wallace Road.
While fleeing, Chaney lost control and struck another car near Wallace Road and Shady Lane. He then stopped a silver van on Wallace and forced the driver and passenger out of the van at gunpoint. Chaney then fled south on Wallace in the stolen van.

A Madison County sheriff’s deputy was approaching on Wallace as the carjacking victims, still in the street, pointed out the van fleeing on North Parkway. The deputy pursued the van and was shortly joined by Jackson police officers. During the pursuit, Chaney nearly struck an officer’s car.

The pursuit ended on West Park Place when Chaney ran into his mother’s residence at 163 West Park Place with the deputy and officers running after him. Once inside, Chaney fired a shot and the deputy shot back, striking Chaney. He was subdued and taken into custody.

Chaney was transported by ambulance to Jackson-Madison-County General Hospital with a grazing gunshot wound to the scalp. He was treated at the emergency room and released to police custody.

Kenner died at the scene. Price was transported by ambulance to Jackson-Madison-County General Hospital and was later airlifted to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis for a gunshot wound to the head. Price was later released from the hospital.

Chaney still has a pending charge of attempted aggravated assault for an alleged attack on a jailer at the Madison County jail in March 2014.
