Oakland Police Department Recognized for Progressive Work Responding to Large Demonstrations

Oakland Police Chief Sean Whent was an invited panel speaker at President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century policing hearings held at the University of Cincinnati on Friday, January 30, 2015. Established by Executive Order on December 18, 2014, the Task Force seeks to identify best practices in policing and is dedicated to identifying how policing practices can promote effective crime reduction while building public trust. Chief Whent participated on a panel and spoke about best practices for police interaction during demonstrations. Chief Whent shared the insight OPD has gained during our many demonstrations and protests.

In reflecting on the experience Chief Whent said, “We are committed to providing a balanced response to demonstrations, protecting the rights of those gathered, and ensuring everyone‘s safety while also preventing property damage. We have implemented policies, procedures and training that reflect our dedication to this mission. The men and women of OPD have handled recent protests with professionalism and their hard work and commitment to the City of Oakland is being recognized nationally.”
