OSBI Agents Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting in Dover
Friday evening at approximately 5:45, the Dover police chief made a traffic stop on a suspected drunk driver on highway 81 on the north end of the city. A Kingfisher County sheriff's deputy quickly provided backup to the stop. Steven Andrew Smith, 36, exited the vehicle and reportedly pulled out a knife. The officers made numerous demands for Smith to drop the knife. The Kingfisher County sheriff's deputy fired his weapon when Smith reportedly made a threatening gesture toward the officers. Smith was hit twice in the chest. The El Reno man was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Kingfisher and then mediflighted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where he is recovering. The Dover police chief called OSBI to investigate the shooting. The OSBI will present the district attorney with a written report once the investigation is complete.
