On January 29th, 2015, at about 11:52 p.m., deputies from the Kern County Sheriff's Office responded to Interstate 5, approximately 2 miles north of Lost Hills for a possible shooting. The suspect in the shooting crashed his vehicle into a vacant field near the roadway. Two off-duty members of the Mount Shasta Fire Department stopped to help, but were fired at by the suspect as he fled the vehicle. The off-duty fire personnel were not injured.

A short time later, deputies and officers from the California Highway Patrol arrived on scene. Within minutes, the deputies and officers were fired upon by the suspect who had taken a hidden position under a tumbleweed. The deputies and officers did not return fire. The Kern County Sheriff's S.W.A.T. team was deployed and responded to the scene. The S.W.A.T. Team was able to safely approach the suspect and determine he was deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

It was later determined the suspect vehicle had been reported stolen to the Lemoore Police Department.
