Increase in Catalytic Converter Thefts

January 29, 2015

Increase in Catalytic Converter Thefts

In recent months, Culver City has seen an increase in catalytic converter thefts. A catalytic converter is a component of your vehicle’s exhaust system. Thieves are primarily targeting Honda Elements, although other vehicles may also be targeted. The thefts have occurred in residential neighborhoods throughout Culver City during hours of darkness.

Thieves are targeting catalytic converters because they contain precious metals and are a popular commodity on the resale market. A catalytic converter can be removed by a thief in just a few seconds using a small power saw. Thieves either recycle stolen catalytic converts or sell them using craigslist, eBay, or at local swap meets for $100 to $600.

In the wake of this recent increase, the Culver City Police Department would like to remind residents to be vigilant, and watchful of suspicious persons or vehicles who are not known to the area. Pay special attention to anyone who appears to be working on a car. If you see any suspicious activity, contact the Culver City Police Department by calling 911 (emergency) or 310-837-1221 (nonemergency).

Remember, if you see something say something!

Contact Lieutenant Jason Sims with any questions at 310-253-6258.
