MAYOR'S WINTER SNOW STORM BRIEFING No. 1

In an effort to keep the community informed of the Winter Snow Storm of January 26-27, 2015 and the activities of the Township of Saddle Brook, these briefings will be issued periodically and when appropriate.

The Township of Saddle Brook Office of Emergency Management activated its emergency command center at police headquarters at 12 noon on Monday January 26th. The emergency management team including the Mayor, Business Administrator, Chief of Police and Emergency Management Coordinator, DPW, SB Volunteer Ambulance Corps and other emergency services representatives discussed the various roles and responsibilities of their respective departments. A county-wide teleconference was conducted with Bergen County Executive Tedesco and all the Mayors and Emergency Management Offices within Bergen County to communicate the county and municipal storm readiness procedures and protocols.

In anticipation of the severe Snow Storm and Blizzard, NJ Governor Chris Christie has declared a State of Emergency. The pending Snow Storm may produce significant snow accumulation of up to 18-24 inches and with wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour will create Blizzard like conditions and limited visibility. Traveling by vehicle or even walking outdoors during the storm is extremely dangerous and is discouraged.

Saddle Brook Public Schools have cancelled school for Tuesday, January 27th, 2015.

Saddle Brook Township ordinance prohibits parking vehicles on all streets when 3 or more inches of snow has accumulated on the roads. In anticipation of the snow fall to begin Monday evening, and to enable the DPW to adequately plow and clear the streets of the snow, all residents should begin to remove all parked vehicles from the roadway. Vehicles should be parked in driveways or on your lawns and/or within your property limits. Vehicles should remain off the streets until the DPW has plowed and cleared the roads of all the snow. The DPW will be plowing and salting all township roads throughout the evening and into Tuesday. The police department shall be enforcing the snow emergency no parking prohibition
and issuing summonses to all vehicles parked in the street.

The volunteer Ambulance Corps and Fire Department personnel will be on stand-by and are ready to immediately be dispatched from their respective buildings and firehouses for all medical emergencies and transports and fire or related calls.

In the event it may become necessary to implement an emergency shelter for residents, the county has initiated Bergen Community College on Paramus Road in Paramus as the place to go. If in the event it may become necessary to implement our local facility emergency shelter, the Senior Center on Caldwell Avenue would be the place to go. Transportation to the shelters will be the primary responsibility of the affected residents. As an alternative in some cases, township provided transportation can be implemented if necessary.

During and throughout the storm, all residents are urged to stay indoors and at home. When the storm is over, residents are asked to begin clearing the public sidewalks, access walkways and steps to your home. As a reminder, snow removal from sidewalks, walkways and driveways must not be placed into the road. If a fire hydrant is located in front of your home, please clear an area of 2 to 3 feet around the hydrant and make sure it is accessible from the street.

The Township of Saddle Brook will continue to be issuing emergency and informational messages on our NIXLE community notification system, telephone, email and text alerting systems and on social media including Facebook and Twitter accounts of http://www.facebook.com/SaddleBrookTownship, http://www.facebook.com/SaddleBrookPD, http://twitter.com/SBrookTownship and http://twitter.com/saddlebrookpd when appropriate. Please sign up for and/or monitor the notices accordingly.

On behalf of the Township Governing Body, sincere thanks to all our emergency services personnel for their efforts in maintaining the safety of our community and to all residents for your attention, support and cooperation.

Periodic briefings will follow when and as information becomes available.

Very truly yours,
Mayor Robert White
