Media Release

The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaiʻi recognized Lloyd Ishikawa on Thursday (January 22) as East Hawaiʻi “Officer of the Month” for January.

Ishikawa, a 28-year veteran officer assigned to the Puna District, was honored for his role in capturing four wanted fugitives.

On November 19, a 26-year-old man was attempting to steal a car from a parking lot, when he encountered the owner and fled on foot. His image was captured on a surveillance camera. South Hilo Patrol officers investigating the case showed the photo to Officer Ishikawa, who immediately recognized him as a man wanted for parole violation, burglary, auto theft and a drug offense. The fugitive was arrested later that day.
On November 20, Ishikawa located a 35-year-old felon wanted for parole violation and for several abuse and firearm cases. He arrested him and turned him over to detectives, who later charged the felon and set his bail at $140,000.
On November 24, Ishikawa arrested a 41-year-old felon who was wanted for an abuse incident the previous day during which a firearm had been discharged. Drugs and a firearm were recovered from the man’s vehicle. He was charged with the offenses, and his bail was set at $122,800.
On January 8, Ishikawa’s persistence led to the arrest of a 29-year-old felon who had been wanted for more than a year on five warrants, including two “no bail” warrants and others totaling $2 million. The man was also wanted for sexual assault. That case was turned over to detectives.

Captain Samuel Jelsma commended Ishiwawa for sharing “his wealth of information” with his fellow officers. “His consistent focus of efforts in taking out the ‘hard targets’ creates a safer environment for officers and residents alike,” Jelsma wrote in nomination papers.

As “Officer of the Month,” Ishikawa is eligible for “Officer of the Year.”

The East Hawaiʻi “Officer of the Month” award is a project of the Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaiʻi.
