Deputies Respond to a Welfare Check in Blue Jay that Resulted in an Officer Involved Shooting

INCIDENT: Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Peace Officer / Officer Involved Shooting
LOCATION: 400 block of Milburn Drive, Blue Jay
VICTIMS: San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputies
SUSPECT: Scott Prather, 55, Blue Jay
SUMMARY:
On Thursday, January 22, 2015, at approximately 12:07 a.m., deputies from the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Station responded to a residence on Milburn Drive to conduct a welfare check. The reporting party relayed concerns regarding the resident, Scott Prather, indicating Prather may be a danger to himself and was in possession of firearms. Deputies arrived and attempted contact with Prather by telephone and made public address announcements, but Prather did not respond. A short time later, Prather exited the residence holding two shotguns. Prather raised and pointed one of the shotguns toward a deputy and deputies were forced to shoot Prather. Prather was transported to a local hospital where he underwent surgery and is expected to survive.
Sheriff’s Specialized Investigators from the Homicide Detail responded and are conducting the investigation.
