Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. of the Cass County Sheriffs Office reports that on 01/19/2015 at 1:13pm deputies responded to a personal injury accident on Indian Lake Rd. at Silver St. in Silver Creek Township.
The crash occurred when 87 year old Leroy Whelan of Dowagiac attempted to make a left hand turn onto Silver St. and failed to yield the right of way to a southbound vehicle driven by 54 year old Boyd Saylor also from Dowagiac. Whelan had to be extricated from the vehicle by fire personnel.
Whelan was transported by Pride Care ambulance service to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, MI for treatment of minor injuries.
Both subjects were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, and alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
