Information and evidence obtained in this investigation revealed that Joe Angel Martinez, Jr. shot and killed Monica Barrientos. Martinez then shot and killed himself.
***ORIGINAL RELEASE***
At 11:45 PM on January 16, 2015, Amarillo Police officers were dispatched to the 500 block of SE 13th Ave on shots fired and a female screaming. As an officer arrived at the intersection of SE 13th and Lincoln, he saw a man point something at him. It appeared as if the man was armed with a pistol. The armed man then disappeared behind some vehicles and the officer heard a gunshot from the area the armed man was last seen. Additional units responded to assist. The armed man was found with a gunshot wound to the upper body and was deceased. Officers followed up on the original information of a female screaming and found a female inside a residence in the 500 block of SE 13th Ave deceased from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the upper body. Special Crimes investigators responded to the scene and spoke to several witnesses. Justice of the Peace Gary Jackson also responded to the scene.
The deceased were identified as Joe Angel Martinez, Jr. age 38 and Monica Barrientos age 29. The investigation continues and if anyone has information about this case, call the Special Crimes Unit at 378-9468.
