Sleepy Driver Strikes Trailer on Interstate 70

Putnam County—Last night at 7:50, Indiana State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the 44 mile marker. Both drivers were slightly injured, examined at the scene and released.

Preliminary investigation revealed a white 2007 Saturn, driven by 53-year-old Alan Myers of Indianapolis, Indiana, was eastbound in the driving lane approaching the rear of other eastbound traffic. Myers failed to slow and struck the rear of a U-Haul trailer being pulled by a 2005 Ford Taurus, driven by 54-year-old Christopher Dixon of Indianapolis, Indiana. The Saturn came to rest in the median, the Ford Taurus came to rest in a field on the south side of the roadway, and the trailer came to rest in the middle of the eastbound lanes.

Alan Myers, driver of the Saturn, is believed to have fallen asleep prior to striking the trailer in the rear. Myers was cited for unsafe lane movement and not wearing seatbelt. Traffic was slow in the area until approximately 10:00p.m.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Jonathan Cumbie. Assisting were Troopers Yan Dravigne, James Crisp, Clifford Brooks, and Probationary Trooper David Cox Jr. and the Cloverdale Fire Department.
