Asheville woman charged with kidnapping biological son from McDowell home

Detective Paul Alkire of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged Summer Starr Scott, 31, of Asheville, with one felony count each of kidnapping, breaking and entering and larceny of a motor vehicle.
Scott and Daniel Hargis, of Old Glenwood Road in Marion, are the biological parents of a 4-year-old boy. Hargis has full custody of the child.
At 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, Hargis returned home with his son and found that Scott had allegedly broken into the house. An altercation ensued between the couple. Alkire said, when Hargis stepped outside to call 911, Scott took the couple’s son, stole Hargis’ truck and fled.
Area law enforcement officers were alerted, and McDowell County sheriff’s deputies and N.C. Highway Patrol troopers stopped the truck a short time later at Love’s.
The 4-year-old was not harmed and has been returned to the custody of his father.
