Artesia Burglary Suspect Leads Deputies on Early Morning High Speed Chase.

This morning at 1:47 am, Lakewood Station deputies responded to a burglary in progress at the “Wienerschnitzel,” located at 11615 South Street in the city of Artesia.  When they arrived, they saw the suspect climb out of the drive-thru window of the closed business.  He quickly entered a 2006 Mazda and fled, nearly striking one of our deputies during his escape.

A vehicle pursuit ensued, with deputies chasing the vehicle into the cities of Lakewood and Bellflower.  In the interest of public safety, due to the high speeds the suspect was driving, the deputies disengaged their pursuit.  The suspect was followed by a Sheriff’s helicopter through the cities of Downey, Pico Rivera, and Commerce.  At one point, the suspect abandoned his car, and carjacked another vehicle in the city of Commerce.  He sped away and was continually followed by the Sheriff’s helicopter.  The suspect drove through numerous communities while attempting to elude capture.  The California Highway Patrol engaged the suspect in a pursuit, which ended when they conducted a “Pursuit Intervention Technique” in the city of South El Monte.  The maneuver brought the stolen vehicle to a halt, and the suspect was taken into custody.

The suspect was identified as Ionon Belvin Harris, 28, of Pico Rivera.  He is being held at Lakewood Sheriff’s Station in lieu of $75,000.00 bail on multiple felony charges including burglary, carjacking, assault with a deadly weapon, and felony evading.  He is scheduled to appear in Bellflower Superior Court on Tuesday, January 20, 2015.  Fortunately, no one was seriously injured by the suspect’s actions.

Lakewood Sheriff’s Station provides law enforcement services to the cities of Artesia, Bellflower, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Paramount, and unincorporated communities in Long Beach and Cerritos.
