Two Men From Indy and South Bend Arrested on Gun Charges

Peru – This morning, a traffic stop by an Indiana state trooper led to the arrests of William Frison, 20 Indianapolis, IN, and John Jones, 19, South Bend, IN. They were both incarcerated in the Miami County Jail to face a single count each for possession of a handgun without a permit.

This morning at approximately 1:12 a.m., Indiana State Trooper Steven Glass initiated a traffic stop on a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu which was traveling on Main Street near Forest Street, in Peru. Glass stopped the car because the driver, identified as Frison, was allegedly driving without the car’s headlights activated. During the course of the traffic stop, Glass noticed indicators that criminal activity might be afoot. Also, earlier in the morning, Glass had noticed the occupied Malibu sitting in the parking lot of a closed gas station. Glass requested a narcotics detecting police dog.

An officer from the Peru Police Department arrived to assist and deployed his police dog to conduct a free air sniff around the Malibu. The dog gave a positive alert to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle. During a subsequent search of the car and its occupants, officers allegedly found a small amount of marijuana and two 380 caliber semi-automatic handguns. Both guns had magazines that were fully loaded with bullets. Jones was a passenger in the Malibu. He was consequently arrested with Frison.

Neither man had a permit to carry a handgun. .

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
