Convicted Felon Wanted by Police and U. S. Marshals for Attempted Murder and other Charges in Friday Morning Shooting

Jackson police and the U.S. Marshals Service are searching for Kirby Ross in connection with a Friday morning shooting.

Police investigators have signed a warrant for Ross’ arrest for attempted first-degree murder, attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a handgun by a felon.

Around 11 a.m. on Jan. 9, police responded to a shooting on Garland Drive. When officers arrived, they found a 25-year-old Jackson man, who had been shot in the hand and upper thigh. Officers initially detained the man for security purposes because he had a handgun, but released him when they learned that the man had a valid handgun carry permit and was the shooting victim.

Police investigators determined that the shooting victim and another man, who had arranged to buy a handgun from Ross, went to meet Ross on Garland Drive. Ross pulled a handgun and attempted to rob either one or both men.

The man who was legally carrying a weapon pulled his gun to defend himself. Ross then shot the man in the hand. As the man ran away, Ross shot him in the upper thigh.

The shooting victim was transported by ambulance to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital where he was treated and later released.

Ross is a convicted felon. In October 2012, Ross was found in possession of firearm that had been reported stolen in 2010 from a Jackson Police Department car.

In August 2013, Ross was convicted in federal court for being in possession of a stolen firearm. He served 6 months in jail and was placed on 2-years’ supervised release under the U.S. Probation Office. A probation violation warrant is pending for Friday’s shooting.

Ross is a black man, 22-years-old, 5’ 9” tall and weighs 180 pounds. His last known address is at 31 Gillman Lane Apt. 21 in Jackson.

Police are not releasing the name of the shooting victim or potential gun buyer at this time because both are potential witnesses in a case still under investigation.

Anyone with information on Ross’ whereabouts is asked to contact the U.S. Marshals Service or the Jackson Police Department at 731-425-8400, Crime Stoppers at 731-424-8477 (TIPS) or online at jmcrimestoppers.org.
