Advisory

The Compton Sheriff’s Station YAL is very excited and proud of our student Dajia Brim.

The Compton Sheriff’s Station Youth Activities League (YAL/ www.Comptonyal.org ) is very excited and proud of the special recognition Dajia Brim received from Channel 7 Eyewitness News. We nominated her as a “Cool Kid” and was chosen as one of the Cool Kids. She was featured as one of the winners on January 8, 2015 during the 4:00 PM Eyewitness News broadcast. Her story was featured on the Channel 7 Eye Witness website: http://abc7.com/education/cool-kid-dajia-brim-teaches-others-the-right-moves/467985/

Dajia is a special young lady. She is one of our most inspiring stories about what we do at the YAL. Conceived into a womb of drugs and alcohol, Dajia at a very early age had to deal with the pain of her mother abandoning her, her health problems, dealing with severe asthma and later being adopted. Although she appreciates her adoptive mother, she struggled with the pain of rejection. When she became a teen she also struggled with depression, displayed behaviors of rebellion and disrespect. Her health problems caused her to miss many days of school during her early elementary school years, which greatly affected her learning ability. Her grade point average never reached higher than a 1.5.  This continued until she was 15 years old. She was behind 16 credits as a 10th grader and not scheduled to graduate on time or possibly not graduate at all.

Three years ago she joined the YAL, one of 14 after school programs sponsored by the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation (www.SheriffsYouthFoundation.org. At the YAL she met two very energetic mentors, Ms. Kareema, the dance instructor and Deputy Munoz, the program Manager. She became a dancer with the YAL dance group the Pink Diamonds. With their support, she has come a long way, is now earning a 3.9 GPA,  scheduled to graduate this Spring and is applying to several universities. Despite her health condition, she soon became a student teacher and now has decided to become a volunteer at the YAL, when she turns 18. She now mentors young girls who experience the same struggles she experienced when she was a younger.

Now her future has no limit as a senior at Lifeline High School in Compton, at 17 years old. She has achieved the second highest GPA in the school and the highest GPA in her senior class 3.9. She is also a member of the prestigious competition dance team 'Divas'. She also works as an assistant dance teacher with Princess Feet Dance Academy, volunteers for the community at the Compton YAL and is preparing to go to a college of her choice. Dajia did not let her unfortunate circumstances and situations define her. Dajia is definitely a Cool Kid. As one of the Kool Kids, she will receive $500.00, a trophy, will be invited to a Cool Kids banquet, a tour of the Channel 7 studios and meet the Channel 7 CEO.
