INITIAL RELEASE 01-03-15
On Saturday January 3rd at 6:06 pm Burlington Police and the Burlington Fire Department Ambulance were called to a house on Green Street in Burlington for a report of a man down inside the residence. On arrival the man was found to be deceased. Detectives, prosecutors and staff from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner have begun a thorough investigation. Friends had been asked by family to go to the house to check on a 23 year old man whom they had not heard from as expected.

UPDATE 01-04-15
The victim has been identified as 23 year old Kevin Deoliveira, a native of New Jersey and current resident of Burlington.

We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Deoliveira’s family and friend at this difficult time.

An autopsy performed earlier today by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner revealed injuries not consistent with accident or suicide. The manner of death has been tentatively ruled a homicide and investigators are proceeding with an exhaustive investigation.

The cause of death is not being revealed at this time as it is a piece of information critical to the integrity of the investigation.

There is currently no information to indicate that this was a random event or that there is any ongoing danger to the public. Additional information will continue to be released as soon as it becomes available.

1/5/15 UPDATE:

Once again we want to reiterate that our thoughts and condolences are with the Deoliveira family at this difficult time. I spoke with Kevin’s mother this morning. She wants all to know that she loved him very much and the family was supporting him as he worked to build a life away from his original home, here in Burlington.

Extensive work continues to be done on this constantly evolving investigation. We have more than 20 investigators and prosecutors working the case today.

Today we are comfortable releasing that Mr. Doliveira’s cause of death was gunshot wound(s). The exact details, number and location of wound(s), etc. are not yet being released as they continue to be information critical to the integrity of the investigation.

We are following many helpful leads and, as a result, the investigation has a number of specific directions unfolding. All possible investigative avenues continue to be explored.

Investigators have not uncovered any information to indicate that this was a random event or that there is any ongoing danger to the public. Additional information will continue to be released as soon as it becomes available.

Extensive work continues to be done on this constantly evolving investigation. The number of active investigators continues to expand with more than 35 detectives, agents, and prosecutors working the case today. Burlington Police are being assisted by: the Vermont State Police; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF); The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA); United States Marshal’s Service; and other law enforcement agencies both in Vermont and throughout the region.

We continue to follow many helpful leads and, as a result, the investigation has a number of specific directions unfolding.

Extensive work continues to be done on this constantly evolving investigation. As we have mentioned previously, more than 35 detectives, agents, and prosecutors working the case today. Burlington Police are being assisted by: the Vermont State Police; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF); The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA); United States Marshal’s Service; and other law enforcement agencies both in Vermont and throughout the region.

We continue to follow many helpful leads and, as a result, the investigation has a number of specific directions and investigative avenues continuing to unfold.

Today we are asking for the public’s assistance in reporting any suspicious activity, people, sounds, or vehicles in the area of Green Street (and surrounding streets such as Isham Street, Pearl Street, Hickok Street, Converse Court, etc) during the daytime hours, after 7:15 am on Friday January 2nd.

Additional information will continue to be released as soon as it becomes available.
