Indiana State Police Investigate Resisting Law Enforcement and Battery Involving Porter County Sheriff’s Department

South Haven, Lake County- Indiana State Police detectives, at the request of Porter County Sheriff Dave Reynolds, is investigating a Resisting Law Enforcement and Battery that involved his department.

Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 8:50 a.m., this Thursday, January 08, 2015, morning, the Porter County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area of Brook Drive and McCool Road in South Haven about a male subject acting irrational. The male, later identified as Harold W. Gielow Junior, 55 of South Haven, was allegedly throwing a Christmas tree and garbage into the roadway. A deputy arrived and found Gielow on foot in the area of McCool Road just south of U.S. Highway 6 by Al’s Supermarket. The deputy made contact with Gielow who immediately began to fight with the deputy.

A Good Samaritan who resides in the area stopped to assist the deputy until other officers from Porter County and Portage Police arrived.

Gielow suffered a medical emergency as multiple officers tried to subdue him. CPR was given until medical personnel arrived and transported Gielow to Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso.

The deputy, a 5 ½ year veteran of the Porter County Sheriff’s Department, was taken to Portage Community Hospital with a fractured ankle. The 45 year old, Good Samaritan was also taken to Portage Community Hospital with a hand injury.

Gielow is in critical condition at the hospital and his family has been notified.

This is an ongoing investigation with the full cooperation of the Porter County Sheriff’s Department and Portage Police.
