Vehicle Strikes Snow Drift in Roadway and Crashes

Clay County—This afternoon at 12:49, Indiana State Police and Clay County emergency agencies responded to a one-vehicle crash on State Road 42 near the Cory-Staunton Road. Only the driver was injured.

Preliminary investigation revealed a green 2001 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 23-year-old Audrey Mathews of Terre Haute, IN., was eastbound on SR 42 and traveled over a rise in the roadway and immediately encountered a snow drift in her lane. Ms. Mathews could not react in time to avoid the drift and impacted the snow causing her vehicle to spin out of control. The Impala traveled off the roadway on the north side and struck a tree with the passenger side of the vehicle.

Audrey Mathews was transported by CARE ambulance to St. Vincent-Clay Hospital for treatment of hip and back pain. Seatbelts/airbags were in use and directly responsible for her reduced injuries. No citations were issued.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Michael Featherling. Assisting were the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Clay City Police Department, Posey Township Fire/Rescue, and CARE EMS.
