#LASD Deputy Intentionally Hit by Motorist with Suicide by Cop Mission
DATE: Tuesday, January 06, 2015
TIME: 5:15 AM
LOCATION: Southbound on Reseda Boulevard at Prairie Street, Northridge
VICTIM: Deputy Maria Ramirez
SUSPECT: Daniel Hoon Chang, 32 year-old male
UNIT: LASD Court Services Division, Civil Management Bureau
NARRATIVE:
On Tuesday, January 06, 2015 at approximately 5:15 AM, Deputy Maria Ramirez, assigned to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Civil Management Bureau, was driving her marked patrol vehicle southbound on Reseda Boulevard, near Prairie Street, when a vehicle driven by Daniel Hoon Chang rear-ended the patrol vehicle. Believing that this was an accidental collision, Deputy Ramirez immediately exited her patrol vehicle and checked on the welfare of Mr. Chang. Deputy Ramirez saw that the vehicle’s air bags had been deployed and found Mr. Chang breathing but not responsive. She immediately requested medical assistance.
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers from the Devonshire Division responded to the scene within minutes.
After being removed from the vehicle, and as the LAPD officers were talking to Deputy Ramirez, Mr. Chang ran to Deputy Ramirez’s patrol vehicle, got in the driver’s seat and attempted to drive away. Fortunately, Deputy Ramirez had removed the keys from the vehicle’s ignition and had them on her person, preventing the suspect from being able to start the patrol vehicle. Deputy Ramirez and the LAPD officers were able to detain Mr. Chang without incident.
Mr. Chang told the investigating officers that he intentionally rammed the patrol vehicle so the police would shoot and kill him. Mr. Chang was subsequently arrested for Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer and held in lieu of $50,000 dollars bail.
Deputy Ramirez was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries and later released.
