Advisory

Drowning on Shavehead lake, Porter Twp.

Porter Township Man Drowns in Shaveshead Lake

Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood J.R. reports that his deputies responded to a drowning on Shaveshead Lake at 11:04 P.M. on 01/05/2015. Deputies learned that 71-year-old Larry Malsch of Cassopolis and 56-year-old Christopher Habic, also of Cassopolis, were sinking Christmas trees into the lake. The two men were placing the trees in the water to enhance the fishing in that area.

According to Habic, Malsch was in a boat on open water and Habic was on shore. Malsch's boat capsized and he fell into the water. Habic attempted to use another watercraft to reach him but he too fell into the water. Habic then swam the distance to his friend and brought him back to shore.

SEPSA medics transported Malsch to Elkhart General Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Habic refused further medical treatment.

SEPSA medics and the Porter Township Fire Department assisted deputies at the scene.

This incident remains under investigation.
