Friends Arrested After Scuffle with Police

Clay County-- On January 04 at approximately 2:00a.m., a Clay County Sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop at County Road 200 West and 850 North to investigate the driver for suspected impaired driving. Trooper Ian Portteus overheard the deputy’s radio traffic and went to assist. During the DUI investigation, the suspect driver, Steven S. Griffin, became agitated with the officers and eventually refused to cooperate with the field sobriety tests. While the officers were attempting to calm Griffin, a second person arrived on the scene and was identified as Charles D. Gilbert, a friend of Griffin. Both individuals reportedly became aggressive and non-compliant with the officers and a brief scuffle ensued. Griffin also made verbal threats to the safety of the officers. Griffin and Gilbert were eventually subdued, handcuffed, and transported to the Clay County Jail.
