Oven Fire Causes Home’s Evacuation

Maricopa, ARIZ. (January 3, 2015) At approximately 4:20pm on New Year’s Day, Maricopa Fire crews responded to an oven fire at a residence in the 44000 block of West Caven Drive. Engine 575 arrived to find a smoke filled house due to an oven fire.
Prior to the fire department’s arrival, Maricopa Police Department officials kept the resident from re-entering the home. Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire before it could extend to the rest of the kitchen. The residence was searched by crews to make sure all occupants made it safely outside, and the smoke was removed to minimize the damage to their furniture and belongings.
This incident is reminder us of a few things to increase our safety. The smoke alarm was what alerted this resident that there was a fire in the house.
• Frequently check your smoke alarms and batteries so they can alert you with enough time to get out.
• Set a timer so you don’t forget about food in the oven.
• Keep the oven door closed so the fire stays contained longer.
• Lastly, after exiting the structure do not go back inside for any reason.
The Maricopa Fire Department urges all residents to clean and replace batteries on their smoke detectors twice a year.
