Three Killed in Motor Vehicle Crash

Vermillion County—At 2:14 this afternoon, Indiana State Police and Vermillion County emergency agencies responded to a one-vehicle crash on County Road 400 North near 8th Street on the north edge of Cayuga. The crash left three dead and two persons injured.

Preliminary investigation revealed a red 1990 Ford F-150 single cab pickup was eastbound on CR 400 North near 8th, when the pickup traveled over a rise in the roadway, lost control, and hit an embankment on the south side of 400N. After striking the embankment, the vehicle became airborne, and traveled approximately 39 feet before striking the west wall of the Colonial Brick Corporation Office. The pickup continued inside the building before stopping.

Driver: Ethan N. Lee, age 18, Cayuga, Indiana
Airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for neck and internal injuries.

Deceased Passenger 1: Anne E. Clark, age 18, of Muncie, Indiana
Deceased Passenger 2: Caroline Clark, age unavailable, Muncie, IN. (sister)
Deceased Passenger 3: Braeden Hollowell, age 18, Cayuga, IN.

Families of deceased have been notified.

Injured: Donna Stambaugh, age unavailable, of Cayuga, IN. Employee of Colonial Brick and inside the building at time of the crash. Stambaugh was struck and then covered by crash debris before being rescued by other employees. Stambaugh was taken to Union Hospital of Clinton for head and chest pain.

Seatbelts were not in use and alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be the crash causation; however, speed does appear to be a contributing factor. The investigation is ongoing and no citations have been issued at this time

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Mike Laney. Assisting were ISP Sergeant Joe Rutledge, Troopers Jeremy Lewis and Tim Rader, Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office, Vermillion County Coroner Roger Lewis, Cayuga Fire/Rescue Department, Perrysville and Newport Fire Departments and Vermillion County EMS.

Sorry, I do not have a crash photo available.

Under the Law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
