The “Hitman" Scam

The Torrance Police Department has received reports of a scam that threatens to kill people unless they give in to demands and pay thousands of dollars to an alleged assassin.

It is known as the “hitman” scam and has been seen all over the world.  The scam is sent mostly through email but can also be sent through text message.

The author of the email or text claims to be an assassin who has been hired to kill the receiver of the email or text.  The scammer states they will spare your life if you send them a large amount of money.  They claim they are watching you and not to report the message to the police.

The emails and text messages are being sent randomly to thousands of email addresses and phone numbers.  Replying to the text or email will alert the author of the message that you have a live account and they will most likely make more threatening demands asking for more money.  The email or text will state that if you do not send the money, you will be killed.  Do not be alarmed!  This is a scam!
