Hammond, Lake County-A Megabus traveling on the Indiana Toll Road was involved in a chain reaction crash when the driver failed to stop/slow down for traffic.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Glenn Katayama revealed at approximately 12:58 p.m., Tuesday, December 30, 2014, a 2010 Van Hoover double decker bus, owned by Megabus, traveling from Indianapolis to Chicago, and driven by Albert Jackson, 63 of Richton Park, Illinois was west bound in the center lane on the Indiana Toll Road at the 2.1 mile marker (this is approximately one mile west of the Indianapolis Boulevard exit). Traffic up ahead was slowing down/stopping for an earlier fatal crash on the Toll Road when Jackson failed to slow down/stop and hit a 2003 Honda Pilot, driven by Hoon Lee, 41 of Ann Arbor, Michigan in the left rear. This caused the Honda to be pushed out of the way.
A van that was in front of the Honda was able to swerve to the left and avoid being hit.
The bus then hit a Kia four door in the rear causing it to spin out and hit the barrier wall on the right shoulder. The driver, Moshe Greenselv, 68 of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and his wife, Zipora Greenselv, 69 were taken to North Lake Hospital in Gary with non-life threatening injuries.
The bus then swerved to the left after hitting the Kia and hit a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox in the left lane. The Chevrolet driver, Melissa Bittner, 29 of Chicago, Illinois was not injured. The Equinox after being hit by the bus then struck a 2014 Subaru Outback. The Outback was driven by Martin Peacock, 40 of Greenwood, Indiana. He also was not injured. All vehicles had to be towed.
The bus was loaded with 80 passengers, 79 of the passengers were adults, there was only one passenger under the age of 18 traveling alone. That passenger was checked out at the scene by Hammond EMS as a precautionary measure and was not injured. All passengers were transferred to another bus and resumed their trip.
The left two lanes were closed for investigation of the crash, removal of the vehicles and transporting of the two injured. All lanes are reopened at this time.
