Detective Billie Brown of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office charged 44-year-old Mildred Plant Beck, of Patton Avenue in Asheville, and 41-year-old Joel Alan Smith, of Vein Mountain Road in Nebo, with felony breaking and entering a motor vehicle and felony larceny of a firearm.
On Nov. 24, Kenneth Hurd, of Nebo, reported that someone stole a .270-caliber rifle and a rifle scope, having a total value of $700, from his truck while it was parked at Samir’s on Harmony Grove Road.
An investigation led to Beck and Smith, who are not acquainted with the victim. Brown said the pair had stopped at Samir’s at the same time Hurd was there and saw the property in his vehicle.
