Lafayette, Tippecanoe County-A juvenile failed to stop for a State Trooper who saw him driving without any headlights and ended up crashing into a building early this morning.
Around 12:42 a.m., this Saturday, December 27, 2014, morning, Trooper Stephen Grayson was east bound on Greenbush Street at 14th Street in Lafayette in his fully marked state police car when he saw a 2005 Jeep west bound on Greenbush turn south onto 14th Street without any headlights on.
Grayson turned his police car around after the Jeep and watched it make a right onto Morton Street then another right to go north bound on 13th Street. The trooper activated his emergency lights once they were both north bound on 13th Street.
The Jeep failed to stop and accelerated away at a high rate of speed, disregarding a stop sign at 13th and Greenbush Street. The Jeep then lost control and crashed into a building in the 1300 block of Underwood Street. Grayson was able to place the driver in custody shortly after he exited the Jeep.
The driver, a 16 year old male from Lafayette, was transported to Saint Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette with non-life threatening injuries and was eventually released to a parent.
It is unknown if drug/alcohol contributed as toxicology is pending.
Charges are also pending after review with the Tippecanoe County Juvenile Court. The juvenile did not have a driver’s license.
All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
